Unlike many performers in the West who Indian cam models have contracts with camming sites that handle payments, Sheelu manages her own feed. This gives her more control over her content and lets her set her own rates for private shows, which are conducted one-on-one with a viewer. She charges Rs 1,000 for 15 minutes and half an hour costs Rs 1,800. Viewers can send her tips via mobile wallets or use tokens purchased from the site’s website.

While Sheelu is happy with her earnings, she’s not immune to the pressure of the job. She admits that it’s not an easy career for anyone, particularly for someone who is easily offended by strange requests or abusive messages sent by fans. “You have to be strong and mentally prepared for this kind of work,” she says.

Meerim Kadyrkulova, programme coordinator at Bishkek’s Sezim crisis centre, agrees with Sheelu that being a sex cam model isn’t for everyone. “Some of the girls come to us with a lot of problems,” she says. “They’re addicted to sex, and a lot of them don’t think that they’re in a sex industry.”

Kadyrkulova says she hasn’t encountered any Indian cam models who have come to her centre asking for help, but she’s aware that some have been victims of sexual harassment on social media. Some girls have been threatened with sexual violence or had their photos posted online, which she describes as a serious breach of privacy. She believes the popularity of sex cams is a major factor in the increase in reports of cyberbullying against these women.
